Olivine is a solid solution of magnesium olive (Mg2SiO4) and iron olive (fe2sio4), mgfe2sio2, abbreviated as M2S. Its content is 80% - 90%. The content of MgO is 37% - 40%. The content of harmful impurities is very low, (Al2O3 + Cao) < 1.2% (FeO + FeO3) < 10%. Hardness: Mohs 6.5-7.0. The density is 3.2-3.6g/cm ³。

The MgO content of calcined forsterite is higher.

General classification of olivine

Forsterite has different chemical compositions and uses due to different varieties.

Forsterite can be roughly divided into three categories: rich forsterite, calcium forsterite and picrite forsterite.

1) Picrite olivine:

M2S in raw ore has high mineral content, high hardness and very low content of harmful impurities affecting fire resistance. It can also be used as an additive for blast furnace ironmaking. It is a good refractory after calcination.

2) Forsterite:

The raw ore contains a lot of Cao and AI2O3, which is easy to absorb water and self powder, so it is not suitable for refractories. After washing, it can be used as cast steel sand with poor reusability. Or as an additive for blast furnace ironmaking.

3) Magnesium rich olivine:

M2S in raw ore has high mineral content, high hardness and very low content of harmful impurities affecting fire resistance, so it is a high-quality alloy steel molding sand material and good refractory. It can also be used as an additive for blast furnace ironmaking.

It can be processed by crushing

If used for casting, calcined olivine is preferred. The raw meal contains free SiO2, which produces a lot of flue gas during casting
